We faced him the first time in wow's baby days. Back then he was together with Nefarian the ultimate badass. After the effort of 40 raiders and countless corpseruns we learned how to deal with sons and banish him back to the firelands. His name was Ragnaros.
After the Cataclysmic events of Deathwing's rebirth in Deepholm he came back, with his mind set on one thing. Revenge on the mortal world. To achieve this he launched an attack on Mount Hyjal, but was once again banished with the help of Malfurion Stormrage, the demigod Cenarius and the archdruid Hamuul Runetotem.
Last summer Ragnaros launched a second attack. This time he controlled the full force of the firelands from within his own realm, keeping himself safe. The only way to end the immediate threat to the world tree, Nordrassil, was to send a small band of heroes to infiltrate the firelands through Sulfuron Spire, to defeat the firelord in his own realm, on his own ground, meaning he'd be that much more powerful.
Shadow Legacy managed to defeat Ragnaros' 6 agents and gatekeepers in heroic before Deathwing's own instance, Dragon Soul launched. Ragnaros himself proved to be too much of a challenge in the time we had.
After clearing out about half the bosses in Dragon Soul HC, we begun to feel the itch to go back and finish up what we started. Decked in Dragon Soul gear we had the confidence that even a casual small guild like ours could take on the mighty firelord in his ultimate form. So we went back to firelands and begun wiping...
Over 100 tries later, we knew exactly what to do in phases 1-3. Despite some mistakes, on the 2nd of April 2012 we managed to reach the unique 4th phase with overwhelming frequency. During the first 2 hours we saw the final form more often than not, and we started to understand how to deal with the problems there. People, quite understandably, grew tired during the last hour and started to make more mistakes, and we once again saw wipes to simple things like molten seed and double trap blow.
Then came the fated last try, and suddenly everyone got rid of their tunnel vision, and focused 100%. We took it to the last phase once again. Everyone was bent on the idea that this was the try that could bring him down finally.
We had an ill-fated first spawn of dreadflame and cloudburst though, which meant that as the phase went on, more and more of the platform was covered. In the end we were unable to deal with empowered sulfuras due to the traps being stuck in a sea of dreadflame. We made a last ditch effort by bringing him to roots early to make him take extra damage, and then tried to burst his last 6%.
0,019%, or 14k of his hp remained when empowered sulfuras finalized it's cast timer, and a few keyboards were broken that day.
Our resolve however, had only gotten stronger, and our last try proved to be the second last try, because we wanted to try again past raidtime.
Once again everyone was on full focus, and we brought him into phase 4. This time we were luckier with dreadflame spawn and managed to make the phase go on for a while longer than before, which meant that even though we lost one person halfway through, we had enough firepower to bring him down quite undramatically. Finally, thanks to the help from our NPC friends, the firelord had nowhere to flee and the result being his fire put out for eternity.
Congratulations everyone who participated in both the 100+ tries and the final kill. This was really deserved.
We proved that we can win 10-15 minute heroic fights in this guild, not by applying our expertise of game mechanics or by pouring our whole being into one single effort like the hardcore guilds out there, but instead by dedicating ourselfes fully towards the goal, and believing in it even after countless wipes and after the clock hits midnight.
Elune knows we'll need it again for this expansion's final encounters - Spine and Madness of Deathwing
